Fair Prep

Today we took the girls' artwork to the fair. Jim came with us, which was extra nice for me since it was my first time doing this and I just wasn't quite sure what to expect. We ended up having a great experience. We scored a front parking spot and as we unloaded from the car, a volunteer asked if we wanted a ride on his golf cart. He was enamored by Rachel and her big blue eyes. (Really, who wouldn't be?) And Rachel was enamored by the ride; as we drove through the gates, she shouted, "The FAIR! We at the Fair!" He drove us right to the building where we turned in our entries.

Liz is entering her book she wrote and illustrated this last school year, "Octy's Big Avecher", about an octopus who wants to be someone's pet but is too big. She is also entering a pastel drawing she did at school. Miriam is entering a pastel drawing from school and a sparkly butterfly painting she made at art class this summer. And Rachel is entering her skeleton butterfly from art class.

But the best part of the day was when they handed each of the girls their participant ribbons (which they keep calling 'medals'). Ever since Mom and Dad have entered things in the fair and earned ribbons, they have wanted to do the same. The youth art is judged using the "Danish System" which is as follows: "Danish – The judging process to compare exhibit on its own merit against a recognized standard and award as many first placing, etc. as merited. 92% - 100% = blue, 84% - 91% = red, 70% - 83% = white, 69% or less = no ribbon." They put a sticker of the color ribbon that you have won on your artwork.
In the car on the way home, Rachel said, "I hang up my ribbon up by Daddy blue ribbon!" As we left the building, another volunteer had just dropped someone off, so we scored a ride back to our car too. It was a great day at the fair!

Note: Jim is preparing his fair entry this week also. He will be entering another portion of his GI Joe collection including the USS Flagg and some aircraft. The aircraft carrier is over 6' long and 3' wide. It's going to be an awesome exhibit!

You guys are so fun to participate in your fair! I love that the girls got to pick out entries. They are so cute and talented. Sounds like it was a pretty hassle free experience too. Just the way I like it. :) Can't wait to see pics of their entries on display!
