Cancun Vacation!!!

Jim and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary with a trip to Cancun, Mexico. We realized at our 8th anniversary that if we wanted to do something big, we should start saving and planning early, so the anticipation had been building for awhile. We decided to do an all-inclusive resort and ended up at the Sun Palace in the hotel zone of Cancun. We were interested in seeing some of the ruins of the area and enjoying some together time. Mission accomplished!!

We started on Saturday driving down to Grandma B and Grandpa Bob's house. The girls were super excited to spend the week with their grandparents and Grandma had a long list of fun things to do at her house. (Another post will be coming!) Early Sunday morning, Grandpa drove Jim and I to Long Beach airport where we caught our first flight to Phoenix. We got there with just enough time to board our connecting flight to Cancun. It was a little long, but not too bad. Cancun airport was crazy and busy, but we managed to get through customs, exchange some of our money and get a taxi to our beautiful hotel.

Our room was on the second floor with a balcony and an ocean view. The room was good size with a king bed, and a double Jacuzzi. We were pretty much exhausted from the day of travel and it was raining when we got there. We ordered room service, ate dinner and then went downstairs to book our activities for the week. The promotion when we booked our trip was $1500 resort 'credits' to use towards various things. We used some of these credits towards upgrading our room for the week (we had previously booked a smaller room without a view). We used the rest for our tours, a mini photo shoot, and a couples massage at the spa.
Monday was still forecasted for rain, so we planned to shop in the morning and then have our massages in the afternoon. It worked out perfectly. In the hotel district, you can catch a bus just about anywhere and it is only 8 pesos to take you anywhere else up and down the hotel zone. After an awesome buffet breakfast, we visited a couple of the malls and checked out a ton of shops. We saw a lot of the same things after awhile, but managed to find some fun items here and there. Jim bought himself a chessboard and set to add to his collection. It is beautiful with the Mayan calendar carved on the board. The pieces are shaped as Mayans and Conquistadors; it's very fun. We also picked up some souvenirs for the girls.

We made it back to the hotel without getting too wet and grabbed some lunch. Then we went downstairs to the spa for our massages. The facilities were gorgeous and the massages were great. Afterward we sat in the sauna for a bit. That night we ate at the fancy, gourmet Italian restaurant. I enjoyed my lobster bisque and the spinach fettuccine, but was not a huge fan of my veal. Jim's chicken was much better and the gnocchi with pesto was delish! We also had a gorgeous view of the ocean at dinner.

Oh, fun! Good choice upgrading the room and getting the couples massages...we won't be going to Cancun for our 5-year, but maybe we can get massages anyway?
